Bahrain 8h: Toyota take surprise 1-2 as lap one drama decides overall win

The #7 Toyota of Conway/Kobayashi/Lopez took an unexpected victory in the Bahrain 8h, overcoming the limitations of Success Handicap to lead the #8 Buemi/Hartley/Nakajima TS050.

Rounding off the overall podium was the #1 Rebellion Racing of Menezes/Nato/Senna who recovered from a first lap collision with the #5 Ginetta Team LNT car to finish three laps off the lead.

Despite lacking in laptime compared to their non-hybrid competitors, the nature of the TS050’s power delivery thanks to the four-wheel drive in acceleration zones helped to manage tyres at a typically high-deg circuit.

The Michelin-shod #22 United Autosports Oreca stormed to their first WEC victory as the Alberqueque/Di Resta/Hanson trio led almost all of the eight hours in class, finishing fourth overall.

Owner, and McLaren CEO, Zak Brown watched on as the team led home the #38 Jota and #37 DC Racing cars by over half a minute, both running Goodyear tyres.

Aston Martin #95 secured victory in the GTE-Pro category, as the ‘Dane Train’ of Sorensen/Thiim who wrestle the championship lead from the #92 Porsche of Estre/Christensen.

Ferrari’s #71 car and the second Aston Martin of Lynn/Martin rounded off the podium.

It was a disastrous race for the two Porsches who, after locking out the front row, suffered unfortunate mechanical issues mid-race. Both 911 RSR-19s had to visit the garage and lose over a lap to the class leaders.

Team Project 1’s #57 Porsche of Bleekemolen/Ten Voorde/Keating claimed a maiden GTE-Am victory, ahead of the #98 Aston Martin driven by Turner/Gunn/Dalla Lana, as the #86 Gulf Racing Porsche of Barker/Watson/Wainwright rounded out the podium.
