The two-time Formula One champion made his IndyCar debut at the Indy 500 in 2017, with a Andretti-McLaren joint entry.

In 2017 Alonso was beyond impressive, setting competitive lap times in the Rookie Test, bagging fifth place in qualifying, before being at the sharp end for 179 laps.

The outstanding debut performance was cut short by his Honda engine expiring with 21 laps to go.

The Spaniard left Indianapolis adamant that he could take home the Berg-Warner trophy one day, and if his debut was anything to go by then this could well be the year he completes motorsports ‘Triple Crown’.

In this years Indy 500, McLaren will field a single car entry choosing to use a Chevrolet engine after unceremoniously cutting short the relationship with Honda.

Despite much speculation that Alonso would be part of a full season entry, it emerged in November last year that he would only race the legendary 500 mile event.

The 37-year-old appeared excited to begin work on this years Indy 500 assault, conversing with engineers and mechanics in the video released by McLaren.

Fernando Alonso’s return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the biggest stories of the year. The Spaniard will undoubtedly be throwing everything at his second attempt to win motorsports fastest race.

Will we see the 2018 Le Mans winner ‘kiss the bricks’ and ‘drink the milk’ come May?

McLaren, Alonso, and his global fanbase will be hoping so.
